The Great American Shopping Season has made its way to India, marking an interesting addition to our retail culture.
Large online retailers like Amazon and Flipkart are offering significant discounts starting today, Friday, 29 November, as a Black Friday Sale. Other offline retailers like Croma and Reliance Retail are also not staying behind. They are also running a Block Friday shopping festival. Usually, the Black Friday shopping festival will last until 2 or 3 December.
In the United States, Black Friday is a significant event, traditionally falling on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day in November. It marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. In India and other countries like the UK, where Thanksgiving is not a concept, retailers have started celebrating it as a shopping festival.
Is the advent of Black Friday in India another example of the global influence of American culture? No. It is another reason retailers create an occasion for shopping and encourage buyers to participate. We have festivals all year in India, so there are shopping festivals almost every month. Our primary festival season starts in October near Dashehra and runs till New Year.
Whatever the reason, Indians love to shop, and this is yet another exciting opportunity to indulge in our favorite pastime.
Happy Shopping!
